STEP 01

Book Your Flights

Important: The introduction meeting starts at 15:30 on day 1, followed by a walk through Iten. Aim to arrive at Eldoret airport by 14:00 at the latest.

International Flight

Make sure you fly to JKIA airport in Nairobi. You have two main options:

Option 1: Evening Arrival

Fly during the day and arrive in Nairobi in the evening. You'll need a hotel near the airport and a ride from JKIA to your hotel. We can provide trusted driver contacts. Hotels like Ibis are 20-30 minutes from the airport.

Option 2: Morning Arrival

Fly at night and arrive in Nairobi in the morning. Take a domestic flight a few hours later. Immigration and luggage pickup can take 30-90 minutes. Aim for a domestic flight departing 2.5+ hours after landing.

Domestic Flight

The best option is to use www.jambojet.com

Jambojet has 4-5 flights per day from Nairobi to Eldoret. All luggage must be picked up in Nairobi and checked in again for your flight to Eldoret. Check-in is normally one hour before departure.

Pro tip: There's a restaurant called Pauls Caffe opposite the departure terminal for your Jambojet flight, with good food and secure luggage storage.

Travel by Car or Bus

t's possible to travel from Nairobi to Eldoret by bus or matatu (minibus). This is a 7-hour journey through beautiful Kenyan landscapes. However, road safety is not optimal, so we recommend flying as the safest option.

STEP 02

Get Your E-Visa

All travellers to Kenya need to get an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). This replaces the previous visa process.

Apply for your ETA at: www.eta.kenya.go.ke

International Flight

Make sure you fly to JKIA airport in Nairobi. You have two main options:

Application Timeline

  • You can apply from 3 months before arrival

  • We recommend applying 6-2 weeks before arrival to avoid confusion

  • Normally confirmed within 1-2 days

  • Validity starts from the day of confirmation

What You'll Need

  • Picture of your passport bio page

  • Flight ticket

  • Booking confirmation (you'll receive this from us)

Note: When asked for the reason of your visit, mention tourism/visit. The "training and seminars" option is for corporate groups only.

STEP 03

Vaccinations & Health

Kenya itself does not require vaccinations at entry, but check with your local health authorities for their recommendations.

UK Recommendations

  • Typhoid

  • Tetanus

  • Hepatitis A

Option 2: Morning Arrival

India and some other countries have a mandatory yellow fever vaccine. You MUST get a yellow fever vaccination certificate before travelling to Kenya if this applies to you.

About Malaria

Malaria is common in Kenya, but does not exist in Iten and Eldoret due to the high altitude (2000-2400m). Mosquitoes are present but do not carry the malaria parasite.

If you plan to visit Nakuru for a wildlife safari, you can consider anti-malaria medication. Note that this medication does not prevent malaria but works as a first form of treatment.

Perspective: As far as we're aware, none of our guests, including those who visited Nakuru, have ever contracted malaria or other tropical diseases. However, always consult your local health authorities for official medical advice.

Medical Facilities

  • Iten: Has a hospital and private clinics for minor treatments

  • Eldoret (45 min drive): Several modern hospitals for serious health issues

  • Emergency care: Our staff will ensure you get proper treatment if needed

STEP 04

Iron Levels

Did you know? Runners with low iron levels are unlikely to get all the training benefits from high altitude training

While it may seem over the top for amateur runners, it's worth doing a blood test to check your iron levels, especially your ferritin level

Optimal Ferritin Level

For optimal distance running results, many sports doctors recommend a ferritin level of at least 50. This is considerably higher than standards for the average person.

Action step: If you're below 50, consider taking an iron supplement for a few weeks before your trip to maximize your training benefits.

STEP 05

What to Pack

Here's our comprehensive list of recommended items for your Kenya Camp experience.

Running Shoes

We run on dirt roads (wide trails with hard soil and stones), dirt tracks, and tarmac roads. Bring trail or regular running shoes with good support. Carbon-plated shoes work well on smooth surfaces.

Regular Clothes

It can be fresh before 8 AM and after 6 PM due to altitude. Bring a sweater or jacket. Between June-August, it can be cold during the day, so extra warm layers are recommended.

Sports Nutrition

Gels & Sports Drinks: Available in Eldoret but expensive. Consider bringing your own. Drinking Bottle: Bring your own. Squeezable sports bottles aren't easily found.

Running Clothes

Day temperatures: 18-25°C. Mornings can be fresh at 6:30 AM. Bring running shirts (you get one from us), shorts or tights, and a jacket or long sleeve for mornings.

Sun Protection

Sunscreen: The sun is sharp due to altitude and proximity to equator. Available locally but expensive. Apply especially between 10 AM-4 PM. Cap/Sunglasses: Essential protection.

Other Essentials

Ear plugs (if you use them - not available locally)
Shower gel (we provide soap but bring your favorite)

      Optional: Educational Materials

During most camps we visit a public primary school with 200 pupils from poor backgrounds. The school and children appreciate donations such as color pencils, drawing books, and English story books. This is entirely optional.

What NOT to Bring

Towels - Provided by us
Mosquito nets - All beds are fitted with nets

STEP 06

Money

Many outlets accept credit cards, but most souvenir shops and running stores in Iten require cash payment.

ATM Withdrawals

Most international travelers can withdraw Kenyan shillings from ATM machines available at airports and in Iten.

Important: Ensure your bank has enabled international use of your card. Banks sometimes block this for safety reasons.

Currency Exchange

You can bring a small amount of dollars or euros to exchange for Kenyan shillings at banks in Eldoret and Iten.

Tips for Cash Management

  • Running stores sell shoes and clothes but only accept cash

  • Local souvenir shops prefer cash payments

  • Keep some cash for tips and small purchases

  • Major expenses at camp can usually be charged to your bill

STEP 07
