Why I Chose Iten, Kenya to Train
Two years ago, I was 23 kilos overweight. Then I picked up running to get fit. I used to run to the temple and back. Actually for me, running was just a tool to lose weight—until it became something more. I became obsessed with speed, discipline, and improvement.
That obsession led me to Iten, Kenya, often called the Mecca of Long-Distance Running. I came here to train at Kenya Camp, a renowned running camp founded by Dutch elite runner and coach, Hugo – who happened to also work in India from 2014 until 2020, coaching some of my countries greatest runners. I came to Kenya to learn from the best. I’m leaving with more than I ever expected.
Daily Life at Kenya Camp – Running at Altitude
Our mornings begin at 6:00 AM with a long run—typically 10 to 15 km—with a pacer. The high-altitude air of Iten is crisp and challenging. The landscape? Endless hills, red dirt roads, and a community of runners pushing their limits.
After breakfast, I turn to my college work—studying Computer Science Engineering and preparing for an MBA. It’s a balancing act, but the structure of the camp helps me stay focused and with the free Wi-Fi I had no issue following online classes.
Afternoons include strength training with Coach Collins or meaningful activities like visiting underprivileged schools nearby. Seeing how these children approach learning with joy and resilience was deeply humbling.
Evenings wrap up with recovery, a light dinner, and sleep. There’s no nightlife here. Just discipline, simplicity, and purpose.
The Humble Greatness of Kenyan Runners
One moment I’ll never forget: while I was running uphill, a marathoner with a personal best of 2:04 shouted encouragement—“Go, go! Push harder!”
I couldn’t believe it. Here was an elite runner, urging a beginner like me to keep pushing. Iten doesn’t just train champions—it shapes extraordinary human beings.
What struck me most is how humble and grounded Kenyan athletes are. They don’t just run fast—they lift others up with them.
How Iten Changed Me
In just two weeks, my running form has transformed. I’ve gained new training techniques, renewed motivation, and a mindset that extends beyond the track.
I came here hoping to run faster. What I found in Iten, Kenya, was something even more powerful—a renewed sense of identity, purpose, and self-belief.
